First BASF plastic derived from
renewable raw materials
BASF has recently added an extraordinary new product to its plastic product line: Ecovio®, which is one of the completely biodegradable plastics. Ecovio is made of renewable raw materials and of Ecoflex®, the familiar BASF bio-degradable plastic on a petrochemical basis. The first item in this new product class is called Ecovio® LBX 8145 and it contains, aside from Ecoflex®, 45% by weight of polylactic acid (PLA). PLA comes from corn, a renewable raw mate-rial, and it is purchased by BASF. The first area of application will be flexible films used for shopping bags, among other things.
As a finished product or for other compounds
The main benefit of Ecovio® is that customers can use this material as a finished product, that is to say, directly and without any additional admixtures, for extruding biodegradable films. Moreover, tailor-made blends can be produced with this new plastic. To this end, customers can mix Ecovio® L as the base component with Ecoflex® or PLA in order to obtain softer or stiffer formulations, as desired.
